About Treforest, South Wales

Treforest (Welsh: "Trefforest") is a village by the banks of The River Taff in the county borough of Rhondda Cynon Taf, South Wales, United Kingdom. Treforest lies within a mile of the famous Welsh market town of Pontypridd, and is located 11 miles north west of Cardiff, the Welsh capital city, with direct A-road access along the A470.

Treforest has a local population of over 5,000, and a university - The University of Glamorgan - with a local, national and international full-time and part-time student enrolment of at least 17,000. Due to the high number of students that live both on campus and in local accommodation in the village, Treforest has a large number of pubs and bars, including: The Otley Arms, The Forest, Flagstones Bar, The Pick and Shovel, and several bars and entertainment venues on the university campus.

The village has a local football team, Treforest Football Club, that plays in the South Wales Amateur League, and is located at the White Tips Stadium. The University of Glamorgan also has a strong emphasis on sport, and its student body are represented in BUSA tournaments with other Welsh and UK universites in sports such as football, rugby, tennis, cricket, basketball and volleyball.

A frequent local bus service runs through Treforest from the early morning to late evening, and Treforest Train Station connects passengers to the centre of Cardiff in 20 minutes, or in the opposite direction, towards 'The Valleys' region, Aberdare, Treherbert and Merthyr Tydfil.

Treforest is the birthplace of Sir Tom Jones OBE, the world famous Welsh singer, who was born on Kingsland Terrace in 1940. Other notable local attractions include The World of Groggs shop on Broadway, whose owner John Hughes was awarded an MBE by The Queen on Saturday 12th June 2010.
